How it works:
Dyna Beads are made from high density ceramic. They are perfect spheres and don't wear. They are also re-usable. They are put into the tyre/tube through the valve or when the tyre/tube is being fitted to the rim. If through the valve, this is the regular method and is usually done with the wheel in place on the bike.
The principal on how they work is governed by Newton's Law of Motion.....'If there is a force in one direction there is also an equal force in the opposite direction'......... and centrifugal force.
Imagine this...a wheel is rotating with the beads inside (slowed down to nano seconds for this explanation), the heavy spot is at about the 2 o'clock position, this force is pulling outward from the axle, automatically the beads will move to the opposite side of the heavy spot and equalize the heavy spot, thus there is balance.
However, as the heavy spot comes in contact with the road (road force), the heavy spot force stops because it has no where to go. The beads should then fall to the centre but they don't because of centrifugal force. The balancing effect takes place just over 40 kph so actually you don't feel anything. When the bike stops, the beads go to the lowest point in the tyre. As the bike now moves, the whole process starts again.
With the beads in, the ride is much smoother and tyre life can extend to more than 40% over normal (i.e. with fixed lead weights). Whereas with weights, a re-balance is usually done after a few thousand kms, to get the best wear and in this case the wheel must always be removed from the bike. No need with Dyna Beads !
The beads do not do any damage to the inside of the tyre/tube.
With all wheel balancing machines, the wheel is spun in the air thus there is no road force. Therefore, in effect, the wheel can never be balanced correctly. Consider the rear wheel....balanced on a machine with the weights, then fitted into the bike where the sprocket and chain is re-fitted/drive shaft and diff is situated. These 'unbalanced' items immediately destroy all your hard work on the balance machine.
A wheel with Dyna Beads installed cannot be checked for balance on a machine because there is no road force available.
Of course one can't see into a tyre to check how the beads work, so... the factory guys in New York came up with this demo...... go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eq263AYgyYg
Installation:
Tubeless Tyres:
- Rotate the wheel until the valve stem is at the 06:00 position.
- Remove the valve core.
- Screw the Plastic Tube onto the thread of the valve stem.
- Open one bag and pour the beads into the Applicator Bottle.
- Cut off the top of the spout on the Applicator Bottle (hole size 3-4.5mm).
- Keep the Bottle upright and push the tube onto the spout firmly.
- Carefully lift the Applicator Bottle until you get a small, steady stream of beads, don’t rush!
- If the beads jam up at the valve, tap the valve stem with a screwdriver (or similar item) until the beads fall into the valve, continue pouring.
Tubed Tyres: (NB: It may be necessary to remove the tube if already fitted)
1. Rotate the wheel until the valve stem is at the 12:00 position (if tube not removed).
2. Remove the valve core.
3. Hold the tube with the valve stem at the 12:00 position (if removed) and hand ream the
stem bore with a sharp 3mm drill bit.
Hint: Put a little air into the tube before reaming so that the exhausting air blows the
shavings out while you are using the drill bit.
4. Then install the Dyna Beads as per steps 3 – 8 above (or before you put the tube into the tyre).
